Which Pacific island country is often among the first places to enter January 1 each year?

The story behind the answer

Kiribati is the Pacific island country often among the first places to enter January 1 each year.

The reason is geography combined with a deliberate time-zone decision. Kiribati spans three time zones, including UTC+14:00 in its Line Islands. UTC+14 is the world’s most advanced civil time zone, so inhabited places there reach midnight and the new calendar date before almost anywhere else.

Kiribati’s eastern islands were shifted across the International Date Line in 1994. The change placed the Line Islands, including inhabited Kiritimati, on the calendar’s leading side and eliminated the awkward situation in which different parts of the same country were nearly a day apart.

The wording “often among the first” matters. Other Pacific locations can coincide with or approach Kiribati depending on seasonal time changes, and Samoa once used UTC+14 during daylight saving time. Fiji and Tonga are early celebrators too, but Kiribati’s UTC+14 Line Islands give it the standard quiz answer.
