The Summer Games seasonal event began in August 2016.

It was Overwatch’s first seasonal event and was timed to correspond with the 2016 Summer Olympics. Blizzard used the event to make the live-service game feel connected to real-world occasions while offering temporary activities and themed cosmetic items.

Summer Games introduced Lúcioball, a soccer-inspired mode starring Lúcio. The event also established a pattern that later Overwatch events followed: limited-time gameplay, event-specific rewards, achievements, and cosmetic items that could return when the event was rerun.
