Cassidy, whose full name is Cole Cassidy, is an American gunslinger and damage hero. Matthew Mercer has voiced him throughout the Overwatch series, including when the character was known as Jesse McCree. Mercer is also widely recognized as a voice actor, game designer, and the Dungeon Master of Critical Role, with credits including Levi Ackerman, Chrom, Jack Cooper, and Yusuke Kitagawa.

Cassidy’s name changed in October 2021. He had originally been named Jesse McCree after a former Blizzard employee, but Blizzard renamed the character following misconduct allegations and the employee’s departure from the company. The fictional hero’s history was adjusted around the new name, while Mercer continued to provide the voice.

Within the story, Cassidy came from Santa Fe, New Mexico, and once belonged to the Deadlock Gang, which trafficked military hardware. After Overwatch captured the gang, he avoided prison by joining Blackwatch, the organization’s covert division. His ultimate ability is Deadeye, not Defense Matrix or Molten Core.
