Which original Stanley Cup trustee served alongside John Sweetland?

The story behind the answer

Philip D. Ross was the original Stanley Cup trustee who served alongside John Sweetland.

Lord Stanley’s original regulations called for two trustees to govern the Cup and oversee the conditions under which it was awarded. John Sweetland and Philip Dansken Ross were appointed in 1893, shortly after the trophy was donated. Ross therefore served as one of the Cup’s first custodians, not as a later NHL administrator.

The wording can cause confusion because Ross is often listed by his initials, “Philip D. Ross,” while fuller references give his name as Philip Dansken Ross. He should also not be confused with Art Ross, the famous player, coach, manager, and namesake of the Art Ross Trophy. They were different people.

The trustees retained authority over the Cup until 1947, when control was ceded to the National Hockey League. Ross remained a trustee until his death in 1949, making his tenure substantially longer than Sweetland’s, who served until 1907.
