Which organization replaced GATT as the main global trade body in 1995?

The story behind the answer

The World Trade Organization replaced the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade as the main global trade body in 1995.

The WTO was created by the Marrakesh Agreement, signed in Morocco on 15 April 1994. It began operating on 1 January 1995, following the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations. Unlike GATT, which was primarily a set of rules and agreements, the WTO is a permanent international organization.

The WTO administers agreements covering goods, services and intellectual property. It also provides a forum for negotiations and operates a system for settling disputes between member governments. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland.

GATT did not disappear entirely: its rules for trade in goods were incorporated into the WTO framework as GATT 1994. The WTO is sometimes confused with the IMF or World Bank, but those institutions focus mainly on monetary stability, development finance and related economic matters rather than administering global trade rules.
