Which organization manages the global allocation of IP addresses and AS numbers?

The story behind the answer

IANA manages the global allocation and coordination of IP addresses and Autonomous System numbers.

The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, or IANA, maintains the central registries and global pools for Internet number resources. It allocates large blocks of IP addresses and AS numbers to the five Regional Internet Registries, which then distribute resources within their regions to networks, providers, and organizations. IANA also records protocol parameters and coordinates other core Internet registries.

IANA does not normally assign an individual address directly to a home user or network operator. That work is handled through the hierarchy of RIRs, local or national registries, and Internet service providers. The five RIRs are AFRINIC, APNIC, ARIN, LACNIC, and RIPE NCC.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, performs the IANA functions under the current institutional arrangement, so ICANN and IANA are related but not interchangeable quiz answers. ISO, W3C, and IEEE have important standards roles, but they do not manage the global IP and AS number allocation system.
