Up with People headlined the Super Bowl X halftime show during the United States Bicentennial year.
Super Bowl X was played on January 18, 1976, between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys. Its entertainment program was designed around the national Bicentennial atmosphere. Up with People presented the halftime production, which was titled “200 Years and Just a Baby: A Tribute to America’s Bicentennial.”
The organization also participated in the pregame ceremony. Up with People accompanied Tom Sullivan in performing “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the U.S. national anthem. The group’s involvement therefore extended beyond the halftime interval itself.
Modern viewers may expect a single globally famous recording artist at a Super Bowl halftime show, but earlier productions often featured marching bands, drill teams, and large ensemble pageants. Up with People became one of the most frequent performers of that earlier era, appearing in five Super Bowl halftime shows between 1976 and 1986.
