Which organization developed the original World Wide Web at CERN in 1989?

The story behind the answer

CERN developed the original World Wide Web in 1989.

Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist working at CERN, proposed the web in March 1989. His goal was to help researchers share information across different computer systems. He later worked with Robert Cailliau on developing the project.

The core web technologies included HTML for documents, HTTP for transferring them, and URLs for identifying resources. Berners-Lee also created the first web server and browser. CERN’s scientific environment provided the practical need and networked setting for the system.

The web and the internet are not identical. The internet is the underlying global network, while the web is a service that uses it to connect hyperlinked documents and other resources. CERN released the web software into the public domain in 1993.
