The Peach Orchard became the center of Daniel Sickles’s exposed salient on July 2, 1863. The orchard stood beside the Emmitsburg Road on the Union left at Gettysburg and became the focal point of fierce Confederate attacks.

Sickles commanded the Union III Corps. Dissatisfied with the position assigned to him on Cemetery Ridge, he advanced his corps westward to higher ground around the Sherfy farm’s peach orchard.
