Operation Olympic was the planned first stage of the Allied invasion of Japan under Operation Downfall.
Olympic was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1945, with landings in southern Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island. The objective was to seize territory and airfields that could support the next stage of the invasion.
The second stage, Operation Coronet, was planned for the Kanto Plain near Tokyo in 1946. Together, the two operations formed Operation Downfall, the broader plan for conquering Japan’s home islands if the country did not surrender.
Olympic never took place because Japan accepted the Allied terms in August 1945. It is sometimes confused with Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944, or Operation Iceberg, the invasion of Okinawa in 1945. Those were separate operations.
