Operation Olympic was the planned first phase of Operation Downfall, targeting Japan's island of Kyushu.
The invasion was scheduled for November 1, 1945. Allied forces intended to land on the southern part of Kyushu and establish bases for a later assault on Honshu. Kyushu was considered strategically important because airfields there could support subsequent operations against the main Japanese population centers.
The second phase, Operation Coronet, was planned for March 1946 against the Kantō Plain near Tokyo. Together, Olympic and Coronet formed Operation Downfall, the proposed invasion of the Japanese home islands.
Olympic was canceled when Japan surrendered in August 1945. Its cancellation did not mean that the operation was a minor proposal: planners prepared detailed landing schedules, troop movements, naval support, and logistics. The campaign was expected to be extremely costly because Japan was preparing extensive defenses and civilian mobilization.
