Which operation was planned to invade the Kanto Plain near Tokyo after Operation Olympic?

The story behind the answer

Operation Coronet was the planned invasion of the Kanto Plain near Tokyo after Operation Olympic.

Coronet formed the second stage of Operation Downfall, the proposed Allied invasion of Japan. It was tentatively scheduled for March 1946 and would have followed Olympic’s planned attack on southern Kyushu. The Kanto Plain was the strategic area surrounding Tokyo and offered the approach to Japan’s political center.

The operation was expected to be larger than Olympic. Plans called for major American army and Marine formations to land on beaches near Sagami Bay and the Boso Peninsula, then advance toward Tokyo. British Commonwealth forces were also earmarked as later reinforcements.

Coronet was never launched because Japan surrendered in August 1945. Operation Ketsugo, by contrast, was Japan’s defensive plan for resisting an Allied invasion and was not an Allied operation. This difference is a common source of confusion when the planned invasion code names are discussed.
