Which operation was planned as the second phase of the Allied invasion plan Operation Downfall?
Answer
Operation Coronet
Answer
Operation Coronet
Operation Coronet was planned as the second phase of the Allied invasion plan Operation Downfall.
Downfall was the proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands if Japan had not surrendered. Its first phase, Operation Olympic, was scheduled for November 1945 and aimed to seize beachheads on southern Kyushu. Coronet was planned to follow in March 1946 with an invasion of the Kantō Plain on Honshu, near Tokyo.
Coronet was expected to be an enormous operation, requiring the redeployment of troops and equipment from several theaters. Its target included the area surrounding Japan’s capital and the country’s main political and industrial center. Because Japan surrendered in August 1945, neither Olympic nor Coronet was carried out.
Operation Downfall is sometimes confused with Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy in 1944. Overlord liberated territory in Western Europe, while Downfall was a Pacific war plan that remained unexecuted.
