Which Operation Downfall phase was scheduled for November 1945 to invade Kyushu?
Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the Operation Downfall phase scheduled for November 1945 to invade Kyushu.
Olympic was designed as the first stage of the planned Allied invasion of Japan. U.S. forces intended to land on southern Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan’s four main islands, and seize positions for airfields and further operations.
The second stage, Operation Coronet, was planned for early 1946 and would have targeted the Kanto Plain near Tokyo on Honshu. Downfall therefore described the overall invasion, while Olympic and Coronet identified its two sequential phases.
Japan’s surrender made Olympic unnecessary. The planned invasion was canceled after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Soviet Union’s entry into the war against Japan, and the collapse of Japan’s ability to continue organized resistance. Because Olympic never occurred, its projected casualties and battlefield results remain estimates rather than historical outcomes.
