Which Operation Downfall phase planned the invasion of southern Kyushu?
Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
Operation Olympic was the Operation Downfall phase planned for the invasion of southern Kyushu.
The landing was scheduled for 1 November 1945 and was intended to seize the southern part of Kyushu, Japan’s southwestern main island. Allied planners hoped to establish airfields and bases there for the later assault on Honshu.
Operation Coronet was the second phase, planned for the Kanto Plain near Tokyo in March 1946. Together, Olympic and Coronet made up Operation Downfall, the proposed invasion of Japan’s home islands.
Olympic was canceled when Japan surrendered in August 1945. The plan also included Operation Pastel, a deception scheme designed to mislead Japanese leaders about the intended direction of the Allied invasion.
