Which opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart features the clever servant Figaro and his fiancée Susanna?

The story behind the answer

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera featuring the clever servant Figaro and his fiancée Susanna is The Marriage of Figaro.

Mozart set the opera to an Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, who adapted Pierre Beaumarchais’s comedy The Marriage of Figaro. The story unfolds over one day in a palace near Seville, where Figaro and Susanna prepare for their wedding while confronting the scheming Count Almaviva.

The opera premiered at Vienna’s Burgtheater on 1 May 1786. Its music combines comic ensembles, intricate finales, and celebrated arias such as “Voi che sapete” and “Non più andrai.” The plot’s social tensions were notable because servants repeatedly outwit their aristocratic employer.

The title can be confused with Rossini’s later opera The Barber of Seville, which depicts an earlier episode involving Figaro. Mozart’s work continues the characters’ story and focuses on the attempted seduction of Susanna by the Count.
