Which opera by Ruggero Leoncavallo follows a troupe of travelling performers and includes the aria “Vesti la giubba”?

The story behind the answer

Ruggero Leoncavallo’s opera Pagliacci follows travelling performers and includes the aria “Vesti la giubba.”

The two-act opera centers on Canio, leader of a commedia dell’arte troupe, whose stage role as Pagliaccio collides with his private jealousy and grief. The troupe arrives in a Calabrian village, where personal betrayal unfolds alongside a performance for the local audience.

Pagliacci premiered at Milan’s Teatro Dal Verme on 21 May 1892, conducted by Arturo Toscanini. Leoncavallo wrote both the music and libretto. The opera is a major example of Italian verismo, a style associated with heightened realism, intense emotion, and contemporary or socially recognizable settings.

“Vesti la giubba” is sung by Canio at the end of Act I, after he learns of Nedda’s suspected infidelity. It is often called “Ridi, Pagliaccio,” after its famous closing phrase. Pagliacci is frequently paired with Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana, but the works have separate plots and composers.
