Which opera by Richard Strauss premiered in Dresden in 1911 and features the Marschallin?

The story behind the answer

Richard Strauss’s opera Der Rosenkavalier premiered in Dresden in 1911 and features the Marschallin.

The Marschallin, or Princess Marie Thérèse von Werdenberg, is the mature noblewoman at the center of the opera’s opening act. She is involved in a relationship with the young Octavian, but she ultimately accepts that time and love are changing when Octavian falls for Sophie.

Der Rosenkavalier premiered at the Dresden Royal Opera on 26 January 1911, conducted by Max Reinhardt’s frequent collaborator Ernst von Schuch. The German libretto was written by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, who became Strauss’s most important librettist.

The title refers to the “Rose Knight,” Octavian, who presents a silver rose to Sophie on behalf of Baron Ochs. Octavian is a trouser role, traditionally sung by a mezzo-soprano or soprano. The Marschallin is also commonly sung by a mezzo-soprano or soprano, depending on the production.
