The one-word title that began the UN theme for International Women’s Day 2023 was “DigitALL.” The full theme was “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.”
The United Nations used the theme on 8 March 2023 to focus attention on how technology and innovation can advance women’s rights and equality. It also connected with the priority theme of the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women, which examined innovation, technological change and education in the digital age.
“DigitALL” is intentionally styled with “ALL” emphasized. The wording highlights the goal of a digital world that includes women and girls rather than reproducing existing inequalities. UN events addressed access to digital tools, digital education, women’s participation in STEM, and technology-facilitated gender-based violence.
A common mix-up is confusing this UN theme with the separate annual campaign themes promoted by International Women’s Day organizations. “HeForShe” is a well-known gender-equality solidarity campaign, but it was not the opening title of the UN’s 2023 theme.
