Which Olympic singles medal did Federer win at London 2012?

The story behind the answer

Roger Federer won the silver medal in Olympic men’s singles at London 2012.

The tennis competition was held at the All England Club in Wimbledon, the same venue where Federer had won the Wimbledon title a few weeks earlier. As the top seed and world No. 1, he reached the final by defeating Juan Martín del Potro in a 4-hour, 26-minute semifinal—the longest best-of-three-sets match in Olympic tennis history.

Federer then lost the final to Great Britain’s Andy Murray, 6–2, 6–1, 6–4. Murray won gold in front of a home crowd, while Argentina’s del Potro defeated Novak Djokovic for bronze. Federer’s silver was his first Olympic singles medal and remains his only one in that event.

This result is often mixed up with Federer’s Olympic doubles achievement. At Beijing 2008, he won doubles gold with fellow Swiss player Stan Wawrinka. Thus, Federer’s Olympic record includes a doubles gold and a singles silver, but not an Olympic singles gold.
