Which Oldsmobile model debuted for 1966 with front-wheel drive?

The story behind the answer

The Oldsmobile model that debuted for 1966 with front-wheel drive was the Toronado.

The Toronado was Oldsmobile’s bold answer to the personal-luxury cars led by the Buick Riviera and Ford Thunderbird. Its front-wheel-drive system, called the Unitized Power Package, placed the V8 and transmission together in a compact arrangement that fit inside a large American coupe without a conventional driveshaft tunnel.

The 1966 Toronado used a 425-cubic-inch Rocket V8 and a specially developed Turbo-Hydramatic 425 transaxle. It was the first mass-produced front-wheel-drive automobile from a U.S. manufacturer since the Cord 810 and 812 had disappeared in the late 1930s.

The Toronado is sometimes confused with the Cutlass because both belonged to Oldsmobile’s 1960s lineup, but the Cutlass was a separate intermediate model and initially used rear-wheel drive. The Toronado remained in production through 1992, passing through four generations and becoming one of General Motors’ most recognizable front-drive nameplates.
