Which Ohio location became the Wright brothers’ main testing field in 1904 and 1905?

The story behind the answer

Huffman Prairie became the Wright brothers’ main testing field in 1904 and 1905.

The open field was located near Dayton, Ohio, beside the Dayton, Springfield and Urbana Electric Railway. Its accessibility allowed the brothers to travel from their bicycle business and conduct repeated airplane experiments after their 1903 flights in North Carolina.

The Wrights tested the Flyer II and Flyer III there. A special launching derrick and monorail helped start the aircraft, because the field did not provide the consistently strong natural headwinds available at Kitty Hawk. The brothers initially struggled with the weaker local wind, but their engine and launch equipment helped solve the problem.

Huffman Prairie is sometimes confused with nearby Wright-related places, including Hawthorn Hill, the family home, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The field itself is preserved as part of Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park.
