Which of the three Niagara Falls is the largest by volume and lies mostly in Canada?
Answer
Horseshoe Falls
Answer
Horseshoe Falls
Horseshoe Falls is the largest of Niagara’s three waterfalls by volume and lies mainly on the Canadian side of the border.
Niagara Falls is actually a group of three cataracts: Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and the much smaller Bridal Veil Falls. Horseshoe Falls curves in a broad crescent between Canada’s Table Rock and New York’s Terrapin Point, which gives it its name. It is also commonly called the Canadian Falls.
Horseshoe Falls is about 2,700 feet wide and 167 feet high. Roughly 90 percent of the Niagara River’s water flows over it, although diversions for hydroelectric power reduce the amount of water crossing all three falls, especially at night and in winter.
A common mistake is to use “Niagara Falls” as though it names only one waterfall. The phrase usually refers to the entire group, while Horseshoe Falls is the individual cataract that carries the greatest volume. The international boundary also passes through the Niagara area, so calling it entirely Canadian is too simple.
