Which of the Thirteen Colonies was founded last, in 1732?

The story behind the answer

Georgia was the last of the Thirteen Colonies to be founded, established in 1732.

The colony received a charter from King George II, and James Oglethorpe became its leading founder. The first settlers arrived in 1733 and established Savannah near the coast. Georgia was created partly as a strategic buffer between South Carolina and Spanish Florida and partly as a planned settlement for people described by its trustees as the “worthy poor.”

Georgia’s development differed from that of the older colonies. The trustees initially restricted slavery and limited large landholdings, although those policies changed after the colony became a royal colony in 1752. Georgia’s economy later relied heavily on plantation agriculture and enslaved labor, like several neighboring southern colonies.

The traditional Thirteen Colonies were grouped into New England, Middle, and Southern regions. Georgia belonged to the Southern Colonies alongside Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. These colonies eventually joined the Revolutionary movement and declared independence in 1776.
