The Pacific Ocean is the deepest ocean on Earth. Its Mariana Trench contains Challenger Deep, whose measured depth is roughly 10,900 metres.
The Pacific is also the largest ocean, extending from Asia and Australia to the Americas. Its name comes from the Latin pacificus, meaning “peaceful,” a name associated with Ferdinand Magellan’s description of relatively calm waters encountered after entering the ocean.
The Mariana Trench lies east of the Mariana Islands. Its extreme depth is greater than the height of Mount Everest above sea level, making it one of Earth’s most dramatic physical comparisons.
Depth measurements differ slightly because sonar surveys and reference standards vary. The key distinction remains clear: Challenger Deep in the Pacific is the deepest known point in the global ocean, while other oceans contain important deep trenches of their own.
