Which ocean is the deepest and includes the Mariana Trench?

The story behind the answer

The Pacific Ocean is the deepest ocean and includes the Mariana Trench.

The Pacific is the largest and deepest of Earth's five named oceans. It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south and lies between Asia and Australia on one side and the Americas on the other. Its name comes from the Latin pacificus, meaning peaceful, a name associated with Ferdinand Magellan's comparatively calm passage across part of it.

The Mariana Trench, east of the Mariana Islands, contains Challenger Deep, the deepest known point in Earth's oceans. Measurements vary by method, but its depth is roughly 10,900 meters below sea level. The trench formed where the Pacific Plate is being forced beneath the Philippine Sea Plate.

The Pacific contains thousands of islands and is bordered by much of the volcanic and earthquake-prone Ring of Fire. It strongly influences global climate through heat storage, ocean currents, and events such as El Niño and La Niña. “Largest” and “deepest” are related here, but they describe different measurements.
