Which ocean current is the largest warm-water current in the Atlantic Ocean?

The story behind the answer

The Gulf Stream is the largest warm-water current in the Atlantic Ocean.

It is a powerful western boundary current that carries warm water northward from the Gulf of Mexico and the tropical Atlantic along the eastern coast of North America. Near Florida, it is known as the Florida Current; farther north, it becomes part of the broader North Atlantic circulation system.

The Gulf Stream influences regional climates by transporting heat from low latitudes toward the North Atlantic. It also affects marine ecosystems, weather patterns and the movement of floating organisms. Benjamin Franklin published an early chart of the current in the eighteenth century after investigating why ships took different times to cross the Atlantic.

The Gulf Stream is not identical to the entire Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. It is one surface-current component within a larger system involving wind-driven flow and sinking, spreading water at depth. This distinction prevents the current from being confused with the global ocean conveyor concept.
