Which oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert was home to the ancient Oracle of Amun visited by Alexander the Great?

The story behind the answer

Siwa Oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert was home to the ancient Oracle of Amun visited by Alexander the Great.

Siwa lies near Egypt’s border with Libya, more than 500 kilometres west of Cairo. Its springs, date palms and fertile land made it a vital settlement in the desert. The oasis was known in antiquity as a religious centre dedicated to Amun, a major ancient Egyptian deity.

Alexander visited the oracle in 332 BCE, during his conquest of Egypt. Ancient writers later reported that the priests recognized him as a son of Amun, a claim that helped strengthen his political authority. The exact words of the consultation remain uncertain because surviving accounts differ.

Siwa is sometimes confused with Egypt’s Bahariya, Dakhla and Kharga oases, but those are separate settlements farther east. Modern Siwa remains known for its distinctive culture, salt lakes and mud-brick architecture.
