Which oasis city was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Kucha in the northern Tarim Basin?

The story behind the answer

Kucha was the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Kucha in the northern Tarim Basin. Located in present-day Xinjiang, it stood along routes connecting China with Central Asia through the passes around the Tianshan Mountains.

The kingdom became renowned for Buddhism, music, and translation. Kucha produced important Buddhist scholars, including Kumarajiva, who was born there and later worked in Chang’an. The nearby Kizil Caves preserve major murals and sculptures associated with the region’s Buddhist culture.

Kucha’s position made it a meeting place for merchants, monks, artists, and envoys. Its population and elite were closely associated with the Tocharian languages, which are now extinct Indo-European languages known from manuscripts found in the Tarim Basin.

Kucha is often confused with Khotan, another influential Tarim Basin kingdom farther south. Khotan was especially associated with jade and Buddhist traditions, while Kucha was a major northern-route center famous for its music, monasteries, and cave art.
