Which novelist wrote Schindler's Ark, the book adapted into Schindler's List?
Answer
Thomas Keneally
Answer
Thomas Keneally
Thomas Keneally wrote Schindler's Ark, the novel adapted into Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List.
Published in 1982, the historical novel fictionalizes the wartime efforts of Oskar Schindler, a German industrialist who helped save roughly 1,200 Jewish people during the Holocaust. The book won the Booker Prize that year, establishing Keneally as one of Australia's major novelists.
The story began with Poldek Pfefferberg, a Holocaust survivor and one of the Jews Schindler protected. In 1980, Pfefferberg met Keneally in his Beverly Hills briefcase shop and showed him extensive files about Schindler. He later accompanied Keneally to Poland during the novelist's research. Keneally dedicated the book to Pfefferberg, crediting his persistence with causing it to be written.
The novel was titled Schindler's Ark in Britain and Australia, while the American edition used Schindler's List. Spielberg's 1993 film adopted the American title and won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The book is historical fiction rather than a literal documentary: it draws on testimony and records but includes reconstructed dialogue and scenes.
