Which novel by Mikhail Bulgakov features a character named Woland?

The story behind the answer

The novel by Mikhail Bulgakov featuring Woland is The Master and Margarita. Woland arrives in Moscow disguised as a foreign professor and sets the novel’s strange, satirical events in motion.

Written between 1928 and 1940, the novel combines supernatural fantasy, dark comedy, romance, religious thought, and political satire. Woland is strongly identified with the Devil, and he travels with an eccentric entourage that includes Koroviev, Azazello, the succubus Hella, and the talking black cat Behemoth.

The story alternates between 1930s Moscow and ancient Jerusalem, where it presents a parallel account involving Pontius Pilate and Yeshua. Bulgakov’s manuscript was not published during his lifetime. A censored version appeared in the Soviet Union in 1966–67, while fuller editions followed later. The distractors are other Bulgakov works, but none features Woland as its central supernatural visitor.
