Answer
The Handmaid's Tale
Answer
The Handmaid's Tale
Margaret Atwood's novel set in the Republic of Gilead is 'The Handmaid's Tale'. Published in 1985, the dystopian novel is narrated by Offred, a woman forced into reproductive servitude by the regime.
Gilead is a theocratic dictatorship that has replaced the United States after a violent political takeover. Falling birth rates and environmental problems are used to justify a rigid social order in which women lose control over their work, money, movement and bodies.
The title refers to Offred's status as a Handmaid: a fertile woman assigned to a powerful household for the purpose of bearing children. Her name signals possession by her Commander, although her memories and narration preserve an identity the state tries to erase.
The novel became one of Atwood's best-known works and inspired a 1990 film and a television adaptation that premiered in 2017. It is often confused with Atwood's other novels, including 'The Blind Assassin', 'Alias Grace' and 'Oryx and Crake', none of which is set in Gilead.
