Which novel by Emily Brontë features Heathcliff?

The story behind the answer

Emily Brontë’s novel Wuthering Heights features Heathcliff, one of English literature’s most famous tragic and vengeful characters. The novel was published in 1847 under Brontë’s pen name, Ellis Bell.

Heathcliff arrives as an orphan and is adopted by Mr. Earnshaw, becoming closely attached to Catherine Earnshaw. Their intense relationship drives the novel, but social class, betrayal, and revenge shape the story’s darker second half. Heathcliff’s later actions affect two generations of the Earnshaw and Linton families.

Readers sometimes describe Heathcliff simply as a romantic hero, but the character is more complicated. His cruelty, jealousy, and obsession have led critics to call him a Byronic hero or tortured antihero. Wuthering Heights is also distinct from Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, which features Mr. Rochester rather than Heathcliff.
