Answer
Oseberg Ship
Answer
Oseberg Ship
The Norwegian Viking burial ship excavated from the Oseberg mound in 1904 was the Oseberg Ship.
The burial mound stood at Oseberg near Tønsberg in Vestfold, Norway. Archaeologists uncovered the ship in 1904, together with the remains of two women and an exceptionally rich collection of grave goods. The ship itself dates from around AD 820 and was placed in the mound around AD 834.
The Oseberg find is famous for its elaborate animal-style carvings, including spirals, intertwined creatures and carved wooden posts. Its decoration and the quality of the objects provide important evidence about elite Viking art, ritual and craftsmanship.
The Oseberg Ship is sometimes confused with the Gokstad Ship, another famous Norwegian burial vessel. The Gokstad ship was built mainly for sailing and appears more seaworthy, while the Oseberg ship was probably designed chiefly for ceremonial use.
