Shakshuka is the North African breakfast dish of eggs poached in a spiced tomato-and-pepper sauce.
The dish is commonly prepared by cooking tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, and spices in a skillet before cracking eggs into the sauce. The eggs are then covered and gently cooked until the whites set while the yolks may remain soft.
Shakshuka is strongly associated with Tunisia and is also widely eaten across North Africa and the Middle East. Its name comes from Maghrebi Arabic and is often interpreted as meaning a mixture or mixture of ingredients.
It is sometimes confused with Turkish menemen, which usually incorporates scrambled eggs rather than eggs poached whole. Shakshuka is commonly served directly from the cooking pan with bread for dipping.
