The story places Helgi’s revenge at the beginning of his heroic career. Still a very young warrior, he kills Hunding and then becomes a major war leader. His later story centers on Sigrún, a valkyrie who loves him despite being promised to Hothbrodd. Helgi gathers an army, defeats Hothbrodd and his allies, and marries Sigrún.

The legend does not end with a simple victory. Sigrún’s brother Dag later kills Helgi with a spear to avenge their father, Högne.
