Which Norse goddess was the mother of the wolf Fenrir in Norse mythology?

The story behind the answer

Angrboða was the mother of Fenrir in Norse mythology.

Angrboða is described in the Prose Edda as a giantess who lived in Járnviðr, the Ironwood. With Loki, she had three famous children: the wolf Fenrir, the world serpent Jörmungandr and Hel, ruler of the realm of the dead.

These children play major roles in the events leading to Ragnarök. Fenrir is destined to break free and fight the gods, Jörmungandr is associated with the sea and Thor’s final battle, and Hel governs the dead who do not die in battle.

Angrboða appears only briefly in the surviving medieval sources, so much of her characterization comes from her family relationships. Her name is commonly translated as “She Who Offers Sorrow” or “She Who Brings Grief.” She should not be confused with Hel, who is her daughter rather than her mother.
