Which Norse god was the father of Thor in Norse mythology?

The story behind the answer

Odin was the father of Thor in Norse mythology.

Odin is one of the central gods in surviving Old Norse mythological sources. He is associated with wisdom, war, poetry, magic and the care of fallen warriors. In the mythological family relationships recorded in sources such as the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda, Thor is Odin’s son.

Thor is usually described as the son of Odin and the earth goddess Jörð. His mother’s identity is an important detail because Norse mythology does not present Thor simply as the child of Odin and Frigg.

Modern retellings sometimes blend figures from different traditions or use Marvel’s fictionalized family relationships. The medieval Norse sources are the basis for the traditional answer. Odin is also associated with the ravens Huginn and Muninn, the wolves Geri and Freki, and the eight-legged horse Sleipnir.
