Which Norse god does Kratos kill at the end of God of War (2018)?

The story behind the answer

Kratos kills the Norse god Baldur at the end of God of War (2018).

Baldur is the main antagonist who pursues Kratos and Atreus throughout the game. A spell cast by his mother, Freya, made him immune to physical sensation, which also left him unable to feel pain or pleasure. The protection was broken when mistletoe touched him during the story.

After becoming vulnerable, Baldur attacks Freya. Kratos intervenes and kills him by breaking his neck, preventing him from killing his mother. This event has major consequences because Baldur's death begins Fimbulwinter, the great winter that precedes Ragnarök in the game's Norse mythology.

The scene differs from some versions of the traditional myth, where Baldur's death is caused by mistletoe and is not primarily a direct act by Kratos. Players may also confuse Baldur with Thor or Odin, who are important figures in the sequel but are not the god Kratos kills in the 2018 finale.
