Which nonprofit organization operates Wikipedia?

The story behind the answer

The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia. It is an American 501(c)(3) charitable organization that provides the technology, legal structure, fundraising, and staff support behind Wikipedia.

The foundation was incorporated on June 20, 2003, after Wikipedia had initially been hosted and funded through Bomis, Jimmy Wales’s for-profit company. Creating an independent nonprofit helped place Wikipedia’s domains and trademarks under a charitable organization and provided a long-term way to fund servers and operations.

The Wikimedia Foundation does not write Wikipedia’s articles or directly control ordinary editorial decisions. Most content is created, debated, and maintained by volunteer editors. The foundation supports the infrastructure on which those communities work, including Wikimedia’s servers, MediaWiki software, security, legal programs, and public fundraising.

It also operates sister projects such as Wiktionary, Wikibooks, Wikiquote, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and Wikisource. “Wikipedia Foundation” is a common but incorrect name; the official organization is the Wikimedia Foundation.
