The Nokia N95 was the Nokia Nseries smartphone released in 2007 with a two-way slider and built-in GPS. Its unusual sliding mechanism exposed different controls depending on the direction it was opened.
Nokia announced the N95 in September 2006 and released it in March 2007. Sliding the front section upward revealed the numeric keypad; sliding it downward exposed dedicated media playback buttons. This made the phone useful both as a conventional handset and as a portable music and video player.
The N95 was also Nokia’s first phone with an integrated GPS receiver. It shipped with Nokia Maps, allowing users to view maps and use turn-by-turn navigation. At the time, built-in GPS was a notable feature rather than a standard component of nearly every smartphone.
The phone ran Symbian OS v9.2 with the S60 3rd Edition interface. It also offered a 5-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera, Wi-Fi, HSDPA 3G connectivity, and an accelerometer. The later N95 8GB version added 8 GB of internal storage and changed several hardware details.
