Which Nobel Peace Prize winner wrote the 1889 novel Lay Down Your Arms?

The story behind the answer

Bertha von Suttner, a Czech-Austrian novelist and peace activist, wrote Lay Down Your Arms in 1889.

The novel, published in German as Die Waffen nieder!, follows a woman whose life is shaped by war and helped make Suttner an important figure in the international peace movement. Its English title is also sometimes rendered as Lay Down Your Arms!.

Suttner received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905, becoming the first woman to win that prize. She was closely connected with Alfred Nobel after briefly working as his secretary, and historians often note that her advocacy influenced his thinking about peace.

She organized, lectured, and wrote extensively against militarism. Her work helped move peace activism beyond private discussion into international campaigning. Suttner is distinct from Jane Addams and Emily Greene Balch, who were later women Nobel Peace Prize laureates.
