Which Nintendo handheld hosted the first Pokémon games?

The first Pokémon games were released for the Game Boy.

Pokémon Red and Green debuted in Japan as role-playing games for Nintendo’s original monochrome handheld. The system’s link cable was especially important because it let players trade Pokémon and battle friends, features that became defining parts of the series.

Many players associate Pokémon with the Game Boy Color because Pokémon Yellow used color support and the second-generation games were strongly marketed around the Game Boy Color. However, the original Red and Green versions were Game Boy titles. International versions of the first generation included Pokémon Red and Blue, followed by Pokémon Yellow.

The hardware’s limitations did not prevent the games from creating a large, connected world. The first generation introduced the Kanto region, the original Pokédex, gyms, evolutions, and the idea that no single version contained every Pokémon.
