The Nintendo 3DS hosted Pokémon X and Y, the first main-series Pokémon games with fully 3D graphics.
Released worldwide in 2013, Pokémon X and Y began Generation VI and moved the core role-playing series into polygonal 3D environments and character models. Earlier games had used sprites or limited 3D effects, but X and Y presented the world and battles through a consistently three-dimensional presentation.
The games introduced the Kalos region, Fairy-type Pokémon and Mega Evolution. They also added the Player Search System, which made online interaction and battles easier to access during ordinary gameplay.
Nintendo DS games such as Pokémon Diamond and Pearl used some 3D elements, but they were not fully 3D in the same way. That distinction is why the Nintendo 3DS, rather than the DS, is the correct console generation.
