Which Nintendo game was the first to use the Super FX chip?
Answer
Star Fox
Answer
Star Fox
Star Fox was the first Nintendo game to use the Super FX chip.
Nintendo released Star Fox for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993. The game used the Super FX enhancement chip inside its cartridge to help render fast-moving polygonal objects and environments. This enabled a three-dimensional space-combat experience unusual for a 16-bit console.
Argonaut Software developed the technology with Nintendo, and the game introduced Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team. Players piloted an Arwing through the Lylat system while fighting the forces of Andross. The chip did not make the SNES a fully 3D machine; it provided additional cartridge hardware for specific graphical calculations.
Super Mario World is sometimes suggested because it was a major SNES title, but it did not use Super FX. Yoshi’s Island used a later Super FX version, demonstrating how Nintendo continued improving the technique after Star Fox.
