Which Nintendo game was the first to feature Mario’s brother Luigi?

The story behind the answer

Mario Bros. was the first Nintendo game to feature Mario’s brother Luigi.

Released as an arcade game in 1983, Mario Bros. places Mario and Luigi in underground pipes filled with enemies such as Shellcreepers, Sidesteppers, and Fighter Flies. The brothers defeat enemies by hitting the platforms beneath them and then kicking the stunned targets.

Luigi was created as a palette-swapped version of Mario so a second player could control a visually distinct character. His name connects to the Mario Bros. title and to Mario’s Italian-American identity. Over time, Luigi developed his own personality, abilities, and starring roles.

The game is often confused with Donkey Kong because that was Mario’s first appearance, though he was called Jumpman there. Super Mario Bros. made Luigi much more widely known, but Mario Bros. introduced him first.
