Which Nintendo game was the first in the Super Smash Bros. series?

The story behind the answer

Super Smash Bros. was the first game in Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. series.

Nintendo released the original game for the Nintendo 64 in Japan in 1999, with international releases following in 1999 and 2000. It brought characters from several Nintendo franchises together in a fighting game where players tried to knock opponents off stages rather than reduce a conventional life bar to zero.

The initial roster included characters such as Mario, Link, Kirby, Pikachu, Samus, and Donkey Kong. The game supported up to four players, helping establish the series as a party-focused multiplayer experience as well as a competitive fighting game.

Super Smash Bros. Melee followed for the Nintendo GameCube in 2001. Its larger roster and faster mechanics made it especially popular in competitive play, but it was a sequel, not the series debut.
