Which Nintendo game first introduced Yoshi as Mario’s dinosaur companion?

The story behind the answer

Super Mario World first introduced Yoshi as Mario’s dinosaur companion.

Nintendo released Super Mario World for the Super Famicom in Japan in 1990 and for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in North America in 1991. Yoshi appears as a rideable ally who can eat enemies, swallow certain objects, and gain different abilities from colored shells.

Yoshi became important enough to receive his own platform game, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, in 1995. That game is a prequel featuring Baby Mario, but it was not Yoshi’s first appearance.

A common mix-up is confusing Yoshi’s debut with his first starring role. Super Mario World introduced the character, while Yoshi’s Island later placed him at the center of the story.
