Kirby stars in Nintendo’s 1992 Game Boy game Kirby’s Dream Land.
Kirby’s Dream Land was developed by HAL Laboratory and directed by Masahiro Sakurai. It introduced Kirby as a round, pink hero who travels through Dream Land to recover stolen food and the Sparkling Stars. The game established several recurring characters, including King Dedede, who serves as the principal antagonist.
Unlike later Kirby games, the original Dream Land does not give Kirby his familiar copy ability. Kirby can inhale enemies, but he cannot absorb their powers in the same way as in Kirby’s Adventure. This difference is one reason players sometimes remember the later NES game as Kirby’s true beginning.
Kirby’s Dream Land was the first released game in the Kirby series. Its simple controls and compact stages helped make the character accessible on the original Game Boy.
