Which Nike co-founder was a University of Oregon track coach?
Answer
Bill Bowerman
Answer
Bill Bowerman
Bill Bowerman was the Nike co-founder who coached track at the University of Oregon.
Bowerman became head track coach at Oregon in 1949 and developed a strong reputation for training athletes and experimenting with running-shoe design. Phil Knight was one of his athletes at Oregon, creating the personal connection that later helped lead to Blue Ribbon Sports.
Bowerman’s technical interest extended beyond coaching. He altered commercially available shoes and tested new construction ideas, seeking lighter footwear with better traction. His experiments influenced several Nike products, including the waffle sole developed in the early 1970s.
Knight handled much of the business side, while Bowerman contributed coaching knowledge and product innovation. Bowerman therefore occupies a distinctive place in Nike history: he was both a founding executive and a major influence on the company’s early performance-shoe designs.
